Mike remembers listening to big band music in the back of his grandad’s car. He found one of the actual cassettes he heard for this shoot – as well as his first set of sticks. Having Mike sitting with the cassette would’ve been a cheesy shot, so I wanted to do this one as a multiple shot – cinematic, like it was from The Thomas Crown Affair or Sideways (hence the Californian bleaching effect). Also, shooting through the car mirrors brought back that feeling you’d have as a child in the back seats, head out the window, sucking air.

I remember being in a car with my grandad and listening to big band music a lot, and enjoying it. That was formative, definitely.”
